10% Chance of Precipitation- I don’t think so.

Tuesday 8th September 2020 - Gowerton.

What does the weather forecast mean when it shows a cloudy symbol, no rain drops but 10% chance of precipitation?  I use the BBC Weather App, it shows weather by the hour with a percentage for precipitation.  Does it mean that it will be cloudy, no rain likely, nevertheless there is 10% chance of precipitation over the the whole hour OR will it rain for 10% of the hour OR does it mean that the forecasters are 90% sure that it won’t rain at all?  When I see 10% chance of precipitation (today’s forecast through the whole day), I think that it should mean that it is unlikely to rain at all but what we have had today is constant light drizzle.

Janice, the optimist, decided a coat wouldn’t be required whilst we cycled 17 miles up the coast and back and she even insisted on taking sunglasses because she hoped it would actually brighten up.  The weather didn’t change one little bit and as we cycled we just became a bit soggy.  At least I didn’t take my sunglasses.  Irrespective of the weather we did glean some enjoyment from our day.

The cycle route was mainly off road and hugged the coastline.  It was National Cycle Route 4, it also included the Welsh Coastal Path and it is part of Eurovelo Route 1 which starts at the north west corner of Spain and covers the Spanish north coast, the west coast of France, across the Channel, north into England, across South Wales to Fishguard, across the Irish Sea and up through western Ireland.  Wow, what a good ride that would be.  It’s given me an idea....but I think I need to have a chat with Janice.

The route takes us past Llanelli, through Burry Port to Pembrey Country Park.  Llanelli seafront has been improved from its industrial past.  We came across some of its rugby heritage....

Stradey Park was demolished in 2010 for a new Parc Y Scarlets ground and the rugby post was moved here.  I think they have shortened the posts but the saucepans are there!....and ...to use Max Boyce’s famous words, “I was there”.

The whole area was a dirty industrial area of tin plate, copper, iron, lead and silver making.  It must have had massive change over recent decades as all those industries have gone.

The beach at Burry Port.

The beach at Pembrey Country Park.

This area was once a Royal Ordnance Factory but the area is now wooded, it has a cycle circuit, a small steam train, a dry ski slope and a couple of large caravan sites.   The beach is vast and pristine.  Probably not the best weather day for a visit but I image it is wonderful on a nice day.

I wish Janice would take Norman Tebbit’s advice!

On our way back we called into Llanelli town centre.  It’s a place where you would only go once if you had a choice.....least said!

Had a quick castle fix at Loughor.

Back to the van.......it’s still bloody drizzling.  By my reckoning it’s been 90% precipitation all day.....but I’ve had a good day on the bike....I can’t speak for Janice.
