100% Better.

Sunday 6th September 2020.

Just for the record the cove nearest to where we are staying is called Mewslade Cove.  It is one of the prettiest coves we have come across because it is quiet and has a lovely sandy beach when the tide goes out and it is south facing.  We got out walking a little earlier than in recent times....we didn’t even wait till morning coffee time.  We were out around 9.30am to walk along the coast in the opposite direction to yesterday.  We had expected cloudy but mainly dry weather and in the end we had a gloriously sunny day.

The views were amazing.  The pictures don’t do the land and seascapes justice.  We could see the Pembrokeshire coast over to the right, Lundy Island straight ahead and Exmoor to the left.  It is very similar to Cornwall but probably not so commercial.....which is a good thing.

I tried hard to make the picture look as if Janice was a pixie sitting on the mushroom.  As we walked we enjoyed the peace and nature around us.  We saw yellowhammer birds in the fields and comorant out at sea and sitting on rocks.  On our journeys so far we have been a bit disappointed with the blackberries this year.  There seems to be plenty on the bushes but most are small and lacking in plumpness.  Maybe the spring was too dry or the summer too wet, I don’t know.  You probably won’t be surprised to hear that we saw sheep in the fields too, we are in Wales after all.  Once they heard our English accents rather than the Welsh they seemed to be more relaxed.

I must admit that having been in Wales for over a week that they were starting to look quite attractive!  I saw a man in the field grappling with a sheep and I said, “Are you shearing”, he said, “No get your own”!

Our destination for the day was Port Eynon which is a nearby village a little bigger than Rhossili.  After a little bit of searching I found a caravan site shop that sold Sunday newspapers.  It saved me the need to cycle about 4 miles to the nearest general store.  We picnicked on the beach.

It was better sand further along and we enjoyed the sunshine on lovely sands.  We strolled back to our site around mid afternoon.  I couldn’t resist getting my swimming togs on and going down to Mewslade Cove for a dip.  Lovely.  I can’t remember my last sea swim.  It wasn’t too cold either.

Recently we read a newspaper article that said that people who spent time outside surrounded by nature were 30% healthier.  I think it was based on a study with people completing questionnaires about how they felt.  I’m sure other research shows that regular walking improves your fitness by 30% and when that is added to the calories we have burnt and the improved mental health I have from swimming in the cold sea I must be 100% healthier than when I set off this morning.  I’m not sure if it is scientifically possible to get fitter and healthier by 100% every day.......with my Welsh grandfathers heritage I think I could be representing Wales at the next Olympics in any event I wish.

Whatever my fitness is I think I will certainly sleep tonight.
