Still with Andy and Lene we planned our visit to the City of St Davids. most people will know it is the smallest city in the UK. The population is 1,800, that’s just a village really. We wanted to do some coastal walking as well so caught the bus to St Davids. The driver must have been on the day off from his rallying day job because the ride was more akin to a funfair ride, rather scary. I was told off for raising my arms and shouting ‘wheeee’ as we went over a hill and down the other side. We were all pleased to get off safely at our destination.
Despite being small St Davids has a large range of shops and had a small market in operation.....probably because its a tourist hotspot.....and it’s a tourist hotspot because of its particularly large and beautiful cathedral.
This is the shrine of St David. The story goes that David was born in 500AD to his mother St Non on a stormy cliff top. He founded a monastery here and became the Patron Saint of Wales. Like most mothers, Non, was extremely surprised by her sons achievement and is said to have been ‘Non the Wiser’ about how it happened.
We picked up some provisions for a picnic and set off walking along the fantastic coast, made even better by the sun coming out. I bought some more Welsh cakes, we are reviewing this delicacy as we travel.
Fabulous walking day.
During our picnic we were disappointed by the small dry Welsh Cakes. Our favourite so far are the homemade ones made by Bizzie Lizzie near Rhossili, which were larger, moist, had plenty of fruit in and included nutmeg.
Our end point was the pretty village of Solva where we caught the bus back. Happily it was a different driver who at least seemed to value the life of his passengers.
We had another combined meal provided by Andy and Lene, involving chicken stir fry and noodles. It was washed down with more wine and Andy and I reminisced about how hard we worked and how dedicated we were in the Police! Well, not really.....we talked about old rugby escapades. Andy gave his account of what happened when I was left behind in Edinburgh after a Rugby Sevens competition. Janice was shocked by his account because he seemed to think drinking alcohol may have been a factor. It’s a long story but I maintain I was abandoned by my ‘mates’ but against all odds I managed to get back to work the following morning only an hour late. I think I deserved a medal but got investigated and disciplined at work instead.
