Moving on again today. We seem to have a dry and warmish weather forecast down in Pembrokeshire so we will stay in this area for more walking and cycling. We have a CL booked for three nights from Saturday and it is centrally placed on this peninsula so we can see the southern coast near St Ishmaels, the west coast near Dale and Marloes or the north coast near St Brides and Little Haven. Tonight though we will wild camp.
We said goodbye to Andy & Lene but knowing that they were moving to a site very close to our CL, so we may still meet up. Our general plan was to drive down the B road towards Dale, find a lay-by and cycle around looking for wild camp locations in St Ishmael or Dale areas. We packed a lunch and cycled down country lanes. St Ishmaels had a pub and a Community Centre (with a big car park!) but was rather uninspiring as a place. Dale turned out to be a nice quiet bay with a pub, cafe and another nice big public car park but it stated no camping, sleeping or cooking allowed. We did also spot a lay-by close by next to a small beach that was full of vans and cars as we passed.
We had already eaten our picnic but we had our first Bara Brith cake of the trip at the cafe in Dale. Very nice it was too. It’s a kind of fruit tea loaf, not a fruit tea loaf but a tea loaf with softened dried fruit in it. We could very easily be tempted to buy a whole cake. We needed the energy because it was very breezy and the roads were quite hilly.
We cycled back to the van by a different route, joining the B road at a different point. I couldn’t remember where the van was parked? We cycled right.....no van. We cycled back again and turned left and fortunately the van was still in place. I don’t think we could really have lost the van. We drove into Dale with two options for wild camping, one in the lay-by by the small bay and the other was a public car park that banned us. The lay-by was still full so we parked up in the public car park. It is large and flat and perfect for wild camping. If questioned we would claim we weren’t camping because that would need a tent, we would claim we were only eating a salad that didn’t need cooking and we would claim that we were wide awake...no matter what time it was! Anyway, which council employs parking wardens after 6pm on a Friday night.
Whilst having a cup of tea, Andy cycled in the car park and came for a chat. They were all set up at their new camp site. He had a cafe recommendation for us in Marloes for when we get there.
We had an early evening walk along the coast to a headland and passed a wood carvers stall....
I think I could be having nightmares dreaming of these characters.....and no I haven’t been modelling for the sculptor.
The evening light was lovely and we could see across to the Texaco Oil Refinery at Milford Haven. Slightly to the right of this picture.
Having settled back at the van we ummed and arrrrhed before driving round to the lay-by we previously considered so that we wouldn’t have any issues in the morning if a warden did come around early. There were plenty of spaces in the lay-by now so we are settled. As I write Janice is looking at the TV Guide for tonight. Maybe I should do a blog item on what we would have watched if we were at home. It sounds suitably ridiculous! Probably a bit too weird really.
